The town of Aubusson has long since been famous for the high quality of its textiles, its reputation stretching back as far as the 14th Century, as a centre of Medieval tapestry weaving. In the 17th Century, its workshops were given ‘Royal Appointment’ status, commissioned to produce elaborate carpets for the French Court, well-known for their tight weaves and lustrous wool.
This piece dates to the late 19th Century – the period known as the ‘Belle Epoque’ – featuring a wonderfully crisp floral design, worked over a burgundy ground surrounded by a sage green and duck egg blue border, the colours of which have all gracefully aged.
A beautiful carpet, of a rare and impressive size, which would make a fine addition to any interior.
In very good condition for everyday use.
