~ Direct from Europe
This listing is for a stunning pair of carved Black Forest “chicken” candleholders/epergnes. In the summer, the glass inserts were used and fresh cut flowers were arranged in the holders; in the winter the glass was removed and the holders were used for candlesticks!
~ (We seldom find the glass epergnes, they are typically broken or lost over the years)
~ Obviously these were done by a master carver, just look at the details, even the eyes of the chickens are life-like! Notice the smaller chicks, the feather details, the contouring and shaping of the bodies.
~ An original matched pair, see how they face one another!! circa 1880.
