Gorgeously detailed and beautifully cast and patinated, this oval panel depicts, in high relief, the victorious Hercules after his twelfth labor, having subdued the monstrous Cerberus who guarded the mouth of Hades. The powerful physique of Hercules is handsomely detailed, and Cerberus is shown with his three heads and serpent tail. This panel dates from the late 19th century, was sculpted and cast in Italy, and may have been designed to serve as a furniture mount. An old ring on the back facilitates hanging on a wall.
