Richard Geiger Large Oil on Canvas Master Painting Scene of the Commedia dell’arte.
The Commedia dell’arte is an early form of theater in Italy. Various performers in the troupe were identified by costumes and masks. In the 17th century, as commedia became popular in France, the better known characters of Pierrot, Columbine and Harlequin became essentially Parisian. These three actors come alive in this excellent painting by the great Austrian artist, Richard Geiger (1870-1945). In this genre painting, he captures the idea of the Commedia dell’arte in an unsurpassed manner.
