This lovely depiction of Bellerophon and Pegasus, the nude God holding the head of the winged horse, beautifully captures a Classic Greek mythological scene in sculpted bas relief. The artist, Johannes Gelert, finished the relief in old gold gilding, and framed it in oak. Gelert was born in Denmark and immigrated to America, where he exhibited widely and created a wide array of monuments and memorials in New York, Chicago, Nashville, Minneapolis and Cincinnati. This unique sculpture was given by Gelert to the wife of Conrad Rossi-Diehl, who was a good friend of the artist. Conrad was an artist and educator who was born in Germany and later settled in Philadelphia.
