A perfect example of the wealthy, elegant Biedermeier period, this impressive, secretary is veneered in flame mahogany and birch intarsia, with bone escutcheons, secret compartments, locking drawers, tilting leather writing surface, cylinder top and all the bells and whistles a powerful piece like this deserves. Constructed of solid fir and mahogany the three stacking sections and a crown which are perfectly matched and reflect the work of a master craftsman. Locks, keys and hidden hardware are original and functioning. The clean curves, both convex and concave, gleam with the patina of time, in this case about 200 years of loving care. Paper transport labels indicate the secretary traveled through Denmark at one time, but may have originated anywhere in the Germanic world or Scandinavia where it last resided.
