Dutch silver tobacco box, 1803. Tubular with flat and hinged cover. Engraved bower-framed olden-days scenes depicting horn-blowers on horseback and side-saddled damsels setting out for the hunt, the ancestral manse in the background. A comforting vision of the past at a time when Holland was a client state of Revolutionary France with burgher stability replaced by invasion and hyperinflation. Fully marked including stamp for Amsterdam maker Jacobus Carrenhof and date letter. Weight: 9 troy ounces.
