This elegant floral runner belongs to a rare subgroup of early rugs from the Qarabagh Khanate, ornated by motifs inspired by French Savonnerie and Aubusson carpets. During the nineteenth century rugs such as this one were commissioned by the Russian aristocracy to decorate their St. Petersburg palaces in the European style. Today these rugs are are well appreciated for their noble yet understated qualities, so subtly permeated with an old world feeling.
