19th Century French cast iron cafe table ~ sofa table with carrara marble is a splendid example of the Belle Epoque, originally crafted as a table for a cafe or bakery that could be placed anywhere, even in front of the large glass display windows so customers could enjoy their treats while viewing the city sights. The Carrara marble makes for a wonderfully carefree yet somewhat elegant surface, and support is provided by three cast iron legs with elaborate stretchers all welded and bolted together to last for decade after decade. The design makes this table ideal for an island, as a breakfast table, a hall table, on a stairwell landing, behind the sofa, or even as a library table. Suitable in a covered outdoor entertaining space, with the proper metal treatment, it now sports a whitewashed finish that both accentuates as well as softens the iron support structure. Marble remains in place by gravity alone, making it a simple matter to move the table about the house or office, as one’s whims so dictate.
