The powerful physique of Hercules is handsomely detailed, and Cerberus is shown with his three heads and serpent tail. This panel dates from the late 19th century, was sculpted and cast in Italy, and may have been designed to serve as a furniture mount. An old ring on the back facilitates hanging on a wall.

The artist, Johannes Gelert, finished the relief in old gold gilding, and framed it in oak. Gelert was born in Denmark and immigrated to America, where he exhibited widely and created a wide array of monuments and memorials in New York, Chicago, Nashville, Minneapolis and Cincinnati. This unique sculpture was given by Gelert to the wife of Conrad Rossi-Diehl, who was a good friend of the artist. Conrad was an artist and educator who was born in Germany and later settled in Philadelphia.

Pegram is known for a number of public monuments and memorials, including “Hylas and the Nymph,” placed in Regent’s Park a few years after this relief was made, which also features a nude male figure with his arms aloft. Pegram also sculpted bas reliefs or free-standing sculptures for the Imperial Institute, St. Paul’s Cathedral and Buckingham Gate in London, in addition to major works in Cardiff, Norwich, Birmingham and Liverpool. Pegram also used this elongated octagonal form for another allegorical subject, “Perseus and Andromeda.” The bronze is set in an iron frame and structural framework to facilitate installation.

The nude male figure is beautifully detailed, with his muscled arms and legs clearly defined, his head bent down in concentration as he plays the instrument. The lion and bear are shown in profile, each noble and handsome as they walk forward, entranced by the music. The upper edges of the panel are stepped back in the classic Art Deco manner, so the sculptor is anticipating the Moderne style to come. The artist’s monogram — HR — is present in the lower righthand corner, along with the date of the piece — 1910. The sculptor’s identity is not known, but he was likely German or Swiss. The reverse is equipped with two loops for hanging.
