The etching, which captures the musculature and other details of each figure with remarkable texture and faithfulness, won a gold medal in Berlin, a few years after Wolfsfeld moved back to Germany after studying in Italy. The artist was a follower of Adolph von Menzel and became good friends with Otto Greiner and Max Klinger. Starting in 1916 he taught at the Vereinigten Staatsschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst, and was known for etchings of nudes and exotic subjects. In the 1930s, the rise of the Nazis caused him to leave for England, where he became a respected portrait painter. This etching is rare, and in this large format especially so.

The artist, Arthur Riedel, captures the mood of late afternoon as the three young men are heading home after gathering armfuls of wildflowers, each of their brows crowned with fragile blooms. The artist lived and worked in Germany, so it is not surprising that the beauty of the scene suggests poetry and Mahler symphonies! La Cité is a reproduction of the Turgot Map of Paris, originally published in 1739. Created by Louis Bretez, a member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, the map is elaborately rendered in “false perspective,” or bird’s eye point of view. Bretez labored over the extraordinarily detailed plan for years, meticulously documenting each park, and window in the metropolis. The mural is an exacting record of 18th century Paris prior to Baron Haussman’s redesign of the city as well as a remarkable artwork in its own right. Schumacher’s La Cité became part of the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s permanent collection in 1992. This set of wallcoverings consists of the map printed in blue-black ink on natural cork with paper backing. The experimental cork La Cité was printed in limited quantities from 2002-2007 and is no longer available for sale or custom order. Schumacher currently produces the black ink on cream paper version which retails for 3250 USD. La Cité consists of 5 panels, each panel measuring 25″ W by 108″ H. The 5 panels measure 125″ W by 78.5″ H with 12″ of ground below the design and 18″ of ground above. This set is untrimmed and has never been installed. This is an extremely rare find.

The most prominent feature is a lean, tall nude man, facing away from the viewer, holding a battle trumpet to his lips. In the background, a long line of nude men riding horseback crosses a distant ridge line. Paunzen makes masterful use of strong black and gray shades, with huge piles of clouds in the sky and a strong wedge of jet black foreground setting off the nude figure. The print is signed and dated “1918,” and is framed under glass. (Dimensions include matte and frame; visible area is 12.5″ high by 9.75″ wide.)

These prints are part of a large collection of fonts that were used to design lettering on facades, windows and billboards.
You can also see this by the first letter, which is always placed in a grid, so that the painter could scale this letter.
These prints are from France, circa 1900. They are all framed with a narrow burr walnut frame and anti-reflective glass.
One print, the horizontal format, has some cracks. See picture. Given the age and also the fact that these prints were really used as an example, they still look good.

This well-known lithograph by Toulouse-Lautrec represents the upper half of a poster that advertised Victor Joze’s novel titled “Reine de Joie,” which was controversial in its time.

The artwork features a courtesan and two men, presumably in a place of dissoluteness in the Montmartre night. In the book, the young Parisian woman convinced the banker to compensate her with his money in exchange for her time. The second man seems to be outside the main scene, his focus elsewhere.
The whole work portrays the prevalent acceptance of practices like debauchery, and prostitution in that era and time, the huge social gap between different classes and situations where money becomes a tool of domination.

It’s worth noting that the novel “Reine de Joie” itself sparked controversy as it loosely based the character of Baron de Rosenfeld on the real Baron de Rothschild. Here, Lautrec presents a sinister side of social satire, illustrating a scene from the novel in which a flamboyant courtesan agrees to become the kept woman of a wealthy banker, who has been negatively portrayed as a stereotype—revealing an anti-Semitic sentiment regrettably not uncommon in the 1890s. The book and the artwork even provoked protests from Rothschild and his associates, who tore the visual from the walls of numerous Parisian bookshops.

Lautrec’s distinctive style employs expressive, fluid lines that don’t conform to anatomical accuracy, creating a dynamic composition with living figures. This approach engages our senses, allowing us to almost touch, hear their laughter, smell the scent of alcohol, and feel the depicted scene as if we were part of it in real time.
Furthermore, Lautrec’s penchant for exaggeration and his unique character portrayal make him an outstanding storyteller. The use of black for the man and red for the woman adds an opposition between the seriousness and lightness of the two main figures. He, ugly and fat; she, young and enterprising. The grotesque is accompanied by the visual description of the banker having combed a thin lock of the little hair he has left to cover his bald spot on the top of his head. Lautrec defies traditional perspective rules to place figures in an intriguing relationship. As a signature element in his works, the artist often conceals the legs of his figures. It’s important to remember that Lautrec had a handicap linked to his lower body.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec born in 1864 in Albi and died in 1901, was a renowned French painter, printmaker, and illustrator. Known for his distinctive post-Impressionist style, he gained fame for his iconic depictions of Parisian nightlife in the late 19th century. Toulouse-Lautrec’s work, which often featured dancers, cabaret performers, prostitutes, and the bohemian scene of Montmartre – la Belle Epoque” remains celebrated for its vivid colors and intimate portrayal of the era. His art has left an indelible mark on the world of visual culture, and his legacy continues to influence modern art and inspire countless artists worldwide.

“Maîtres de l’Affiche (Masters of the Poster) refers to 256 color lithographic plates used to create an art publication during the Belle Époque in Paris, France. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller 11 x 15 inch format, was put together by Jules Chéret, the father of poster art and distributed between 1895 – 1900. The varied selection of prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. Designed for a subscription audience it showcased the most influential posters of the era in a collectible small format. This is a poster designed by Boutet de Monvel ( 1851-1913) to promote the toothpaste Doctor Pierre of Paris . Known as a student of the Japanese style of art, de Monvel uses some of that technique in the background of the image showing the fine attention to detail . He was known as a painter as well as an illustrator of children’s publications so his talents were used for this poster design. Rich in color and design elements, it should be noted that the actual toothpaste product is not shown.” (Source: Poster Group)
