With legs headed by female busts, a wavy “X” stretcher at the base with scrolls centering a medallion. Topped with a Patricia green marble top.

This table is almost identical to the 18th century model made by the sculptor Jules Degoullons for the Château de Bercy in 1713. With his associates, André and Mathieu Legoupil, Marin Bellan and Pierre Taupin, Degoullons was responsible for much of the carved paneling and carved furniture supplied to Charles-Henri II de Malon de Bercy, between 1712 and 1714. The table was purchased at the auction of the contents of Câteau de Bercy between July 15 and 18, 1860 by Napoleon III and placed in the national collection. François Linke reproduced this model between 1905 and 1910. One Linke model from the collection of Elias Meyer at 16 Grosvenor square in London, illustrated in C. Payne, Linke, p. 244-5, and sold Christie’s New York, May 24, 1993, lot 338.

By François Linke

With serpentine-grey and yellow marble top, above a frieze drawer centred by a female mask cartouche, the sides each centered by a foliate-cast cartouche, the legs are joined by a shaped stretcher centred with a flaming urn finial.

Signed F. Linke to the right hand clasp

Linke was born in Pankraz in Bohemia and was celebrated by the French as one of the greatest ébénistes of meubles de style at the turn of the century. He began his apprenticeship with a Bohemian master at the age of thirteen. Four years later, he toured Austria, settling and working in Vienna for two years. Linke arrived in Paris in 1875, and by 1881 he had established his own small workshop at 170 rue du Faubourg St. Antoine. Taking 18th century styles as his starting point and adapting earlier styles to contemporary taste, Linke produced fine quality furniture, steadily expanding his business during the next 20 years. He firmly established his reputation after receiving a Gold Medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900 for his extraordinary Grand Bureau. He continued to use international fairs as a means of exploring new markets, exhibiting at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, the Liege in Belgium and the 1908 Franco-British exhibition in London. Linke’s highly original designs sprang from the Régence and Rococo styles but were imbued with something quite new, Rococo curves were laden with gilt bronze sculptural mounts in the tradition of A.-C. Boulle (1642-1732) or Charles Cressent (1685-1758). Stylistically, the new designs still adhered to the Rococo; the novelty, however, was Linke’s fusion of the Rococo with the liveliness and the fluidity of the ‘Art Nouveau’. The Revue called Linke’s creations entierement nouveau, and continued to say that ‘Linke’s Stand is the biggest show in the history of art furniture in the year 1900…’ The mounts, or rather sculpture, were characteristic of the finest pieces from the Linke workshops. The most original designs were almost certainly created in collaboration with the enigmatic sculptor Léon Messagé, who excelled in creating lively, high relief, allegorical figures recalling the styles of Boucher and Falconet.

Today, as in the past, Linke is best known for the exceptionally high quality of his work, as well as his individualism and inventiveness. All of his work has the finest, most lavish mounts. The technical brilliance of his work and the artistic change that it represented has never been repeated.

In late 1739 – early 1740 the Sèvres Porcelain Factory opened in the Royal Château of Vincennes, Sixteen years later in 1756 the factory moved to the village of Sèvres located outside of Paris and in route to Louis XV’s Palace of Versailles where it became the preeminent porcelain manufacturer in Europe. When the company ran into financial difficulties, the King who had become an avid client bought out the shareholders and became the sole owner. The factory remained in the royal family until it was nationalized following the French Revolution.

The range of objects produced in the first half of the nineteenth century was enormous, as were the types of decoration that they employed. The Sèvres factory produced ninety-two new designs for vases. The factory is still in production today.

Henry Dasson

The brèche rouge circular marble top above a frieze mounted with allegorical trophies emblematic of the four seasons amid scrolling foliage and fitted with a long spring-release drawer, above two male and two female herm supports and chased with flowers on spirally-fluted tapering feet, joined by a looped ‘X’-shaped stretcher centered by a berried finial

Signed and dated Henry Dasson 1878 to one of the bronze legs.

This elegant guéridon, designed in the goût Weisweiler, epitomizes the supreme quality of Dasson’s finest work. A comparable example, dated 1867 and formerly in the collection of Pierre Lecoules, is illustrated in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le mobilier français du XIX siècle, Paris, 1984, p. 148.

Henry Dasson was considered one of the finest makers of gilt bronze mounted furniture in the nineteenth Century. He established a workshop at 106 rue Vieille-du-Temple, Paris, and specialised in the production of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI style furniture using the very finest ormolu mounts with the highest quality mercury gilding. In 1871, Dasson purchase Charles-Guillaume Winckelsen business and remaining stock.

Dasson exhibited at the 1878 and 1889 Paris Exhibition. He displayed Louis XV and XVI styles as well as pieces of his own modified eighteenth century design. The exhibits in 1878 included a table entirely in gilt bronze, purchased by Lord Dudley.

By François Linke.
Linke index number 1103.
The gilt bronze on the stretcher variously incised and numbered ‘FL/5842′
The circular top inset with a Campan Rubané, quarried in the Campan valley of the High Pyrenees region of France. Campan Rubané marble was used for fireplaces and wall-panels in Louis XIV’s apartments at Versailles, and therefore complements perfectly this Régence style centre table.
This centre table is index number 1103 in François Linke’s inventory and recorded to have been made three times. Two tables are recorded to feature a cherub, known as ‘l’enfant guerrier’, to the stretcher, and one example with a flaming vase, such as featured to the present table and therefore identifying it as a unique example.
Christopher Payne notes that the gilding for such tables was tasked to Maury and the cabinetry to Schmit aided by Sebestik who dedicated over 500 hours of work to their production.
