Vintage Caucasian Floral Qarabagh Rug in the St. Petersburg Style

The floral ornamentation typical of French and English carpets of the 18th-19th century has influenced specific oriental carpet families. In the Caucasus this style became extremely fashionable among the Russian aristocracy of the 19th century, which were enamored with the grandiosity of European decorative arts. While this type of floral design became quite common for flatweaves (such as Bessarabian kilims) it appears almost exclusively on the pile weavings from the Qarabagh region, located in the southern Caucasus.
This relatively late example of the type is distinguished by a lively and well articulated palette and by an elegant arrangement of the floral bouquets, the latter being rendered with extreme precision.

An early 20th century Russian Bessarabian carpet the greenish ivory field with three rows of enlarged floral bouquets within a black scrolling vine and flowering vinery border.

The Bessarabian nomenclature relates to a group of nineteenth century antique oriental rugs and flat weaves or kilims made in the mountainous Carpathian region between the Ukraine and Moldova. Although little is known about the circumstances or workshops where these oldest European carpet and flat weaves were fashioned, the output shows a synthesis of local folk motifs and designs inspired by eighteenth century French carpets popular at the Russian Court and in aristocratic circles.

An early 20th century Russian Bessarabian rug, the vertically striated indigo and pale green field with an all-over symmetrical design of angular flowering vines and flowerheads, within a sand flowerhead and vine border.

Rug production was introduced to Europe by the Moors of Spain between the 18th and 13th centuries. While Oriental rugs initially had a significant influence on European rugs designs, various regions came to develop their own unique styles and techniques over time. In France, starting in the 17th century, factories in Savonnerie and Aubusson began producing some of the most exceptional antique rugs of the last few centuries. From 1660 until 1743 Savonnerie was a manufacture royal, carrying out commissions for pile rugs and carpets specifically designed for the Royal Palaces. In England, high-quality beautiful rugs production in the town of Axminster in the late 18th century gradually paved the way for the Arts & Crafts rugs in the late 19th century when William Morris designed a pattern for an Axminster rug.
