Antler furniture have been one of the popular novelties of the great exhibition of the industries of all nations in London in 1851. A new lifestlye trend was born and the ambitious European middle-class generated a fabulous upswing. One of the first designers to be mentioned is the German carver and furniture manufacturer H. F. C. Rampendahl who gained enthusiastic successes on several world exhibitions with his antler furniture. In the aftermath one began to manufacture antler furniture in series.

This storage for snuff looks like metal, but is made of masterfully crafted ceramic.
This object from the historism period around 1890, was made in Central Europe, due to the depicted theme – the mark on the bottom is not assinable.

The structure is designed like a charming forest hut with a tower – with a door on the side where above “MALEPARTVS” can be read. This alludes to a German fable written in the 18th century (also edited in 1794 by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe), in which the badger visits the fox. This is exactly the scene that is masterfully depicted here in such detail.

The roof with tower of the hut can be removed and used as a box.

At the hand of the badger could be a restoration – we received this object in this condition.

Measurements approx.: height 26 cm – 10,24 in, diameter 20 cm – 7,87 in

The detailed workmanship, the literature reference, the sheer size and the depicted subject matter are special features that are difficult to find.

This elegant cigarette box is beautifully made from 18k gold. The box opens with a push of the smooth button positioned at the front of the piece. The exceptional attention to detail demonstrated by the maker, makes the appearance of the rope-shaped lines very realistic, simultaneously presenting this piece as a very rare example.

Once opened, the inside of the cigarette box reveals the basket weave design, with a smooth finish.

The box is marked ‘750’, alongside other makers’ marks, and weights 118g.
