The Plaque had been hand crafted and designed by August Klein- Purveyor to the Imperial and Royal Court of the Emperor Franz Josef of Austria.
The Revolution of 1848 in the Austrian Empire seen by many Jewish intellectuals as a welcome opportunity to agitate for the emancipation of their community. Generally the social evolution of the Jewish community, the growing number of Jews who wanted to become Masons, their cultural integration, and the progress of the process that would soon lead to their legal emancipation all worked in favor of this change in attitude.
In Austria it all started in 1742, only 25 years after the founding of the Grand Lodge of London and Winchester, the Lodge “Aux Trois Canons” was consecrated in Vienna by a Lodge from Breslau. It was, however, closed only six months later by order of “Empress” Maria Theresa I. Her husband Franz Stephan von Lothringen, (later the German Emperor Franz I.), was unable to prevent the closing even though he himself was a member having been initiated out of diplomatic reasons in 1731 in the Netherlands in a British Deputation Lodge. Although the papal excommunication in Austria had no effect, Maria Theresa particularly feared Masonry as a vehicle for foreign influence.
In 1843 Salomon Nettel was the first Jewish person who was accepted in the secret society of Freemasons but only for the short period of time.
In 1861, when influential Jews were fighting for their equal rights through out the world, beginning of the Civil War in the United States and new Low instated by Emperor Franz Josef of Austria, who signed an important document confirming the equality of Jewish people in society, all of that led to the final acceptance of some outstanding European Jews (with the help of powerful French Jewish authorities) to join lots of Freemasons Lodges through out Europe and United States.
This Plaque has been created in 1886 for the 25th Anniversary on May 19th and has been dedicated to the members who got honoured during this period of time.
The Center of the Plaque shows a Gate with the French phrase which translates in English as “No entrance “. The two sided window shows the Ten Commandments of God ,which we believe has been replaced over the years, although the paper itself is definitely of the 19th century.
We believe that originally there were some precious documents or secret codes represent.
The top of the Plaque shows letters O,A, R. (This Logo has been done in Enamel). They stand for Alpha- the Beginning, Omega- the End and R for Royal. The Royal signs are representing in many of Fleur de Lis which one can find on each name’s plaque.
The names on every single little bronze (fire gold) plaque are the names of the Jewish Freemasons Lodges members through out Europe as a reminder of their difficult and hard path through out the centuries and their incredible achievements.
According to our research quite a few Family members of those people eventually immigrated to the United States of America.
This Plaque is very heavy and its weight is approximately 21 Pounds. The materials include Bronze, Silver (Silver plated on Bronze), Velvet and Silk.
