The antique antler smoking desk set is made of original antlers from the deer and the stag. It was in Germany, circa 1900.

A rare antique writing desk set made of wood and original antlers decorated with fine carved hunting scenes depicting deer families, game and staghond. The wooden base is completely venered covered with thin antler pieces. Executed in Germany ca. 1840. The writing desk is in very good original condition. Small piece missing on one foot.

This smoking ensemble is composed of likely Black Walnut and consists of a small ashtray and a tobacco jar. The humidor is decorated with a bear on the base, and another that functions as a handle on top of the jar’s lid.

Antique Swiss Samuel Troll Fils Key Wind Cylinder Music Box

Made in Switzerland in approximately 1850, this key wind brass cylinder music box is set in a burled walnut case with an inlaid shield in the top and has a glass protective cover over the mechanism. On the inside of the lid is the original label and identifies Samuel Troll Fils as the maker, who is a well known for his workmanship in the production of music boxes from this time period. The music box has its original brass key and is in good period working condition and plays four melodies or ayrs.

Bavarian Pharmacy Balance

This amazing and extremely rare Bavarian Biedermeier-period pharmacy balance stand would have been at home at any apothecary’s shop during the mid-19th century. Crafted of walnut with bold giltwood accents, this stand holds eight separate sets of balances with brass beams and pointers, and weighing pans made of Horn, brass and porcelain. The balances measure out varying sizes; the largest is capable of measuring up to 500 grams, while smallest weighs up to 5 grams. Such balances would have been essential tools in the practice of compounding, or creating customized medications to suit a specific patient’s needs. The delicate porcelain scales even indicate what they were used to weigh: one set is marked “Jodoform,” or iodoform, a disinfectant and antiseptic once used to treat wounds, and the other is marked “Venena,” which is Latin for “poisons.” Each scale also exhibits stamps indicating that they have been tested for accuracy. It is extremely rare to find such a large array of scales, especially those in such wonderful condition, in one collection. This intriguing piece is a must for any medical antiques enthusiast.

The units of measurement in which apothecaries worked were often minute: grains, scruples, drams and ounces. As they were typically used to measure very small amounts of ingredients, apothecary and analytical balances such as these needed to be accurate and very sensitive. The first such balances appeared in the 18th century, coincidentally as great strides were being made in the scientific and medical arts during the enlightenment,

Antique Meerschaum Smoking Pipe with Silver Figural Standing Lion Top & Mounts

This antique meerschaum smoking pipe bowl is unsigned, but presumed to have been made in Germany or Austria in approximately 1900 in the period Biedermeier style. The body of the pipe is composed of meerschaum and has silver mounts featuring a standing figural lion with one paw on a ball on the top. The silver is not hallmarked, but believed to be 800 silver. The silver top is nicely engraved and has a clip mechanism that secures it to the pipe body. There is no pipe stem, but the silver fitting is engraved with complimentary accents as to top. There is a silver shield on the front of the pipe body that shows no monogram.
