When one looks at the old photographs of Johann Huggler, this is a self – portrait. Johann Huggler was known as the “King of the Carvers” of Brienz. The few carvings that survived until this day pay homage to the mastery with which he carved animals and human figures. It was he who opened the Swiss wood carving school in Brienz, ca. 1870, where all the carvers learned the craft to produce the bears that are so collectible today. 18″ tall and 6″ diameter, ca. 1860 – 70, exceptional, rare and important. This appears to be carved by the same hand as inventory #O404 which is a signed piece. Photo included.

Light colored and very detailed. Not easy to find!

Period: Last half of the 19th century

Origin: Switzerland

Size: 18″H x 6″ D.
