The quality and detail of this painting reflects Hans Zatzka’s prime period of fine quality and detailed artworks. Within an ornate finely carved a gilded frame, circa 1885

Hans Zatzka (Austrian 1859-1945) was a well-known and regarded Austrian fantasy artist whose most popular and valuable works depicted figures of young maidens with angels, floral and other cheerful and warm scenes, including Orientalist themes. In the past thirty years alone, the high quality and detail of Zatzka’s beautiful paintings have caught the eye and attention of International collectors and art dealers alike, creating a highly sought after market and demand for his instantly recognizable body of work.

In the late 19th and early 20th century, many of Zazka’s charming works were photographed for commercial and collectible postcards. Though no information about his works being exhibited in museums is currently available, most of Zatzka’s paintings are in private collections and, in the past century, very few of them have become available on the open market.

At the young age of eighteen Zatzka joined Austria’s Academy of Fine Arts under the leadership of Professor Blaas. For his fine early works, in 1880 he received The Golden Fugermedal award.

Zatzka, like many other artists of the era, traveled around Europe working and selling his art and, in one of his many trips to Italy, he developed a special interest in Religious themes, decorating churches with fresco’s as well as painting several religious scenes of Madonna’s and Child, Saints, Angels and others. In 1885 Zatzka was commissioned to paint “The Naiad of Baden” a ceiling fresco at Kurhaus Baden. Most of Zatzka’s income came from his work in religious art and special church commissions.

Numerous leading art dealers from around the world that specialize in late 19th and early 20th century European genre paintings have come to the conclusion that the painter signing his works Bernard Zatzka, Joseph Bernard or J. Bernard is almost certainly the artist Hans Zatzka. The consensus seems quite plausible when comparing works known to have been executed by Hans Zatzka together with similar works displaying the signature; Joseph Bernard, J. Bernard or Bernard Zatzka.

The finely painted gouache depicting a Parisian street scene of the Théâtre du Châtelet is a theatre and opera house, located along the quays of the river Seine in the place du Châtelet, in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, France. One of two theatres built on the site of a châtelet, a small castle or fortress, it was designed by Gabriel Davioud at the request of Baron Haussmann between 1860 and 1862.

Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854-1941) was a French artist of French-Italian parents and was born in Paris on December 11, 1854. He was a populariser of street scenes, usually painted in autumn or winter. His paintings of the early 1900s accurately represent the era in which he lived: a happy, bustling Paris, la Belle Époque, with horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and its first omnibuses. Galien-Laloue’s works are valued not only for their contribution to 20th century art, but for the actual history, which they document. His work can be seen at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Louvier; Musée des Beaux-Arts, La Rochelle; Mulhouse, France.

A typical Galien-Laloue painting depicts sidewalks and avenues crowded with people or tourists mingling before the capital’s monuments. He also painted the landscapes of Normandy and Seine-et-Marne, as well as military scenes he was commissioned to produce in 1914. The Republic of France selected Galien-Laloue to work as a ‘war artist,’ both during the Franco-Prussian War and World War I, chiefly in watercolor.

Galien-Laloue was in exclusive contract with one gallery and used 6 other names: “L. Dupuy”, “Juliany”, “E. Galiany”, “Lievin” “Dumoutier” and “P. Mattig”.

The Commedia dell’arte is an early form of theater in Italy. Various performers in the troupe were identified by costumes and masks. In the 17th century, as commedia became popular in France, the better known characters of Pierrot, Columbine and Harlequin became essentially Parisian. These three actors come alive in this excellent painting by the great Austrian artist, Richard Geiger (1870-1945). In this genre painting, he captures the idea of the Commedia dell’arte in an unsurpassed manner.

Lohengrin refers to the knight of the swan, hero of German versions of a legend widely known in variant forms from the European Middle Ages onward. It seems to bear some relation to the northern European folktale of “The Seven Swans,” but its actual origin is uncertain. It is also a character in German Arthurian literature. The son of Parzival (Percival), he is a knight of the Holy Grail sent in a boat pulled by swans to rescue a maiden who can never ask his identity.
