1920s German Black Forest Planter with Vines and Four Truncated Pots

This early 20th century Black Forest wood planter is composed of a shaped base supporting four boles, a very short one in front, a great one in the center flanked by two shorter tilted ones. Each support a ribbed truncated cone-shaped planter box all connected with highly decorative carved twisted vines. This original planter with four pots circa 1920, with its dark patina and vegetal decor characteristic of the Black Forest style, can hold multiple plants at once while give your lawn or garden a charming rustic look.

Antique Swiss or German Black Forest Styled Hand-Carved & Painted Pedestal

This antique hand-carved and polychromed painted pedestal is unsigned, but presumed to be either Swiss or German and date to approximately 1920 and done in the traditional, Black Forest style. The pedestal features a hand-carved young male peasant standing against the squared and tapered column, and has four hand-carved and painted faces, one on each side. The sides of the columns are decorated with applied carved stylized torches with a gilt finish and a scrolling leaf pattern to accent the base. This pedestal was likely made originally for a clock given the size of the top, but could also be used for a small planter, lamp or candelabra.

Gorgeous fully hand carved Black Forest 19th century plant stand / jardiniere in hand carved Fruitwood.
The stand body has outstanding carvings with the center a dimensional carved bouquet of roses/flowers that extends 2” beyond the basket side. This bouquet is surrounded by lush, leaf laden branches, with faux bois carved edging and open carved trim!
Note the upper stand is carved on all sides with gorgeous faux bois and twigs, making it perfect to “float” in the center of a room, as there’s no ‘backside’! Sweeping carved arms support the upper Stand body. Ornate turned and carved baluster with a tripod base, with stability from the three outstretched carved paw feet. 19th Century French Hand Carved Walnut Black Forest Jardiniére or Planter

A 19th century Black Forest jardinière hand carved of solid walnut in the Alsace region of France, circa 1870s. The detailed, intricately carved wood planter features a realistic hand carved basket weave background with a center cartouche and floral and foliate motifs including hand carved roses and acanthus leaves. The sides and back are also carved, making it perfect to float in the room. Raised on four bobbin legs joined with an “H” stretcher. This elegant, Black Forest jardiniére or planter is a wonderful example of the master artisanry of the region.

The Black Forest is actually located in a triangular area that borders Germany, France, and Switzerland and it extends along the Rhine River. Wood carving has been a traditional cottage industry in the region since the beginning of the 1800s. Black Forest carvings became a symbol of luxury and wealth in Europe.

Black Forest Pair of Jardinière’s hand carved in Switzerland during the late 1800s. The Jardinière’s are complete with their original metal liners and are ready to be planted. Black Forest Furniture first began to appear in the mid-1800s in Brienz, Switzerland and originally only included small Black Forest animal objects made for the tourist trade. In the late 1800s, as tourism traffic increased, so did the number and Size of Black Forest Carvings and soon thereafter was followed by Black Forest Furniture. As luck would have it, Old Plank has recently discovered a treasure Trove of Black Forest Carved Furniture all from one Chateau in France. The French Chateau had a magnificent collection of over (40) pieces of Swiss hand carved Black Forest Furniture. All of our Black Forest Furniture collection will to be listed on 1stdibs.
