Because his home town, La Chaux-de-Fonds, became a wealthy center for Swiss watch production, the town’s leaders had the means to retain L’Eplattenier to design monuments and buildings such as the Musée des beaux-arts de La Chaux-de-Fond. This beautifully rendered self portrait dates from L’Eplattenier’s days as a young but accomplished artist, and its delicacy of line does justice to a handsome, clear-eyed man. The medium is pencil on paper, highlighted with chalk. (Dimensions include frame.)

One lady wears an elegant daytime town outfit with hat and fur, the other lady wears an elegant outfit for a summer afternoon… The gentleman seems to wear an elegant spring or summer daytime frockcoat.
The drawing is mounted in an old, simple wooden frame, painted white and highlighted with gold paint (small deficiencies to the gold paint).
The drawing came to me in this frame.

A silvered frame was chosen to accentuate the sepia tones of the work, which depicts a quaint rural scene with a pond acting as an invitation into the scene, beside which a group of quaint cottages have been built. A lone man in a boat can just be seen at the center of the composition. The design features prominent sycamore trees that have sprouted new growth after the traditional severe pruning that is popular in many places in Europe. The sycamores dominate the left side of the work, contrasting with the new sapling on the right side, with even the cloudy sky seeming to flow in the direction of the younger tree.
François Stroobant was a native of Brussels, and was the first director of the School (future Academy) of Drawing and Modeling in Molenbeek. A medallion with his effigy was placed on July 2, 1908 on this building. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels from 1832 to 1847, and began his apprenticeship in the lithography studio of Antoine Dewasme-Plétinckx, who was very famous at the time. He continued his training by doing his Grand Tour through various European countries: Hungary, Galicia, Italy, then Germany, Switzerland, Holland from which he brought back an abundance of sketches. He was particularly interested in rendering the details of cities, which were the subject of two illustrated works: Monuments d’architecture et de sculpture de Belgique (1853) and The Monumental and Picturesque Rhine, in two folio volumes. As a painter-decorator, he decorated the Château de Presles with frescoes from 1859 to 1860, which Balat had just rebuilt up to date. In the town hall of Brussels, he executed a series of nine paintings representing old Brussels for the office of the mayor. In 1865, he became the founder and first director of the Academy of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean.

Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Los Angeles Art Center and the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris where he studied with Andre L’Hote and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. While in Paris, Di Gesu exhibited extensively, including at the Louvre, the Exposition des Artistes Étrangères, the Grand Palais of the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs among other Parisian Salons. He subsequently attended Barcelona’s Escuela de Bellas Artes before furthering his studies in Rome at the Studio Hinna. Returning to California, Di Gesu worked beside several notable American Modernists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson.

Already a gifted colorist, Di Gesu’s classical training combined with his scientific research into color theory, allowed him to create vivid yet harmonious works which, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, revealed a verve and spontaneity that remained uniquely his own. A prolific artist, Victor Di Gesu was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and in France. After his return to California, he continued to exhibit widely and with success, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
