Fantastic and rare example of Black Forest folk art, a tour de force of carving by a master woodworker. This lift top box in the form of a thatched cottage has many wonderful details. The various surfaces of the walls, the amazing thatched roof, the ladder hanging on the back wall, the way the two part door is half open, the railings and the well. Clearly a work of passion from the artist. Lovely glowing patina that only come with age. Like something out of a Brother’s Grimm fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel.
The top lifts to reveal and interior with a double beveled mirror inset. A very special piece for the collector of Black Forest carvings, or anyone who covets a one of a kind carving. Switzerland late 19th century.
Measures: 13 inches wide, 11 deep, 9 high.
